THE LEGEND of TANJUNG MENANGIS

Long time ago, there was a kingdom in Sumbawa Island. The King had a beautiful princess. She was loved by her family and all of the people in the kingdom.

One day, the princess got a strange sickness. She was fishy smell and her body get full of lumps. The princess was so sad. The King had a contest for whoever that could heal the princess. If the person was male, he would be the princess’ husband. If the person was female, she would be the princess’ sister.

All of the best shamans came to the palace, but nobody could heal the princess. When the King almost gave up, suddenly an old man came to the palace. “I’m from the far island. I will heal the princess, but I have a term. During I’m healing the princess, nobody could disturb her,” said the old man.

The King agreed. The old man began to heal the princess. He put the princess in a case, then he prayed to God. 7 days later, the princess was better. She became beautiful as usual. The old man asked the King to marry him with the princess, but the King refused.

“No! You’re just an old man. You’re ugly! I would not marry you with my daughter!”

The old man was very sad. “Your Majesty. I’m very disappointed with you. Let God give you punishment,” said the old man. Then he left the palace.

Suddenly, the old man changed become a very handsome prince. The princess was very surprised. She chased the prince until she arrive at a cape. However, the prince had been on the middle of the sea. Then he told a lawas :

Ku menong si sengo sia intan e

Ling poto tanjung munangis

Ku pendi onang ku keme’

The princess cried and regret her fate. Since that, the people named the place Tanjung Menangis.
